Suzie Wong, Suzie Wong, Suzie Wong…we’ve been hearing so much about her, but she was shrouded in mystery…until now! We had to enter Suzie Wong to get the scoop, but it’s not what you think!
We sent our roving reporter, Elizabeth, to the pre-opening bash to see just what was behind Suzie Wong’s curtains and what we learned was that this sultry Asian-inspired lounge is a sake lover’s Mecca that has finally come to NYC.
As the first lounge in NYC to offer sake bottle service, Suzie Wong: Saki Lounge is nightlife veteran Carlo Seneca’s latest creation. Located on West 27th street and 11th Avenue in Chelsea, this soon-to-be hotspot is set to offer expertly-selected sakes from various regions of Japan. For you connoisseurs, there will be Kakunko from Ibaragi at ($400 a bottle), Dessai 23 from Yamaguchi, Muromachi Jidai from Okayamaand, and Muroka Nama Genshu from Fukui (prices ranging from $150 - $175). With all bottle service, whether a sake or premium liquor, you’ll also get some edamame and a “titillating round of ‘dirty’ fortune cookies.” Sounds superb!
If you’re not of the sake-enjoying variety, Suzie Wong has specialty cocktails with names like The Geisha, Madame Butterfly, and Ying Yang, as well as in-house fruit-infused sakes featuring such flavors as Mandarin oranges, pears, peaches, cranberry, raspberry, and blueberries—oh my!
As Elizabeth sipped and mingled the room with its red-gloss wood floors, silk banquettes, and glittering brick walls, DJ Kid Capri spun hits that seemed to make even the ceiling-suspended Buddha sculptures dance. Shanna Moakler was hosting (sans her on-again/off-again Travis Barker) along with power publicist Lizzie Grubman. Both ladies looked adorable in their designer dresses and perfectly glossed lips. We’ll be back, although we can’t help but wonder why Suzie spells “sake” with an “i.” But then again…the atmosphere makes this lounge feel quite personal and for the “me-me-me” generation, "I" fits.
